What is a CV and what should it look like?

Curriculum Vitae (CV) is Latin for "course of life" or résumé.

A CV is your personal "advertisement" that gives you the opportunity to introduce yourself and showcase your strengths in order to find a new job. Your CV should be concise, accurate, contain true information relevant to the position you are applying for, and be free of linguistic errors.

What to include in your CV?

PERSONAL DETAILS
Enter your first and last name, e-mail address, and mobile phone number.

EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONS
Start with your most recent education, stating your academic/professional title
And grade, university or name of the educational institution.

Add all other qualifications you have obtained, including those obtained
Through non-formal education.

YOUR POTENTIAL EMPLOYER MAY NOT BE FAMILIAR WITH THE EDUCATION SYSTEM IN YOUR COUNTRY. IF THE NAME OF THE SCHOOL, UNIVERSITY OR EDUCATIONAL ACHIEVEMENTS ARE RELEVANT, INCLUDE ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ABOUT THEM.

Consider...

Which of the following entries regarding your results is appropriate to include in a CV for a foreign employer?

a) Maximum score (200/200 points) in mathematics on the state exam (NMT/ZNO) – achieved by less than 1% of examinees nationwide
b) NMT/ZMO – 200 points
c) State exam NMT/ZMO – 200 points in mathematics

Consider... Correct answer

Even if the employer knows what NMT/ZMO is, they may have difficulty interpreting the result. In this case, it is helpful to indicate where the candidate ranks on the results scale.

What to include in your CV?

WORK EXPERIENCE

Start with your most recent and most relevant experience, providing the name of the company, location, date of employment and a brief description of your role. Focus on your main responsibilities rather than describing your daily tasks. Inform employers about the specific skills you have acquired in the course of your work.

Consider...

Which of the following experiences are irrelevant and can be omitted from your experience description when applying for a car parts salesperson position?

  • Fruit picking abroad (12 years ago)
  • Mechanic's assistant at a tyre service centre (2 years)
  • Flower arranging course
  • Hobby: collecting stamps from the CCCP period
  • Walking neighbours' dogs (casual work)

  • Fruit picking abroad (12 years ago)
  • Mechanic's assistant at a tyre service centre (2 years)
  • Flower arranging course
  • Hobby: collecting stamps from the CCCP period
  • Walking neighbours' dogs (casual work)

Of the above, only one experience deserves further elaboration. The others can be omitted. Mechanic's assistant at a tyre service centre (2 years) is key experience because it shows that you know how a car is built, understand technical terminology and can advise customers on choosing the right products.

What to include in your CV?

INTERESTS AND ACHIEVEMENTS

Show the employer what kind of person you are. It is not only about indicating the skills and interests relevant to the position, but also about showing that you are the right person for the job

Your interests can demonstrate patience, perseverance, commitment, openness to other people or openness to new technologies, which is often not apparent from the information described above and may be important when selecting a candidate.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

In this section of your cv, include information that did not fit in the previous sections, such as foreign language skills, driving licence categories, computer skills, or personal achievements (awards, scholarships, publications).

GDPR CLAUSE, I.E. CONSENT TO THE PROCESSING OF PERSONAL DATA
Your consent to the processing of your data for the purposes of participation in the recruitment process is a condition without which the employer cannot effectively consider your application, even if your CV makes a really good impression.

“I consent to the processing of my personal data for the purposes of the recruitment process (in accordance with the Act of 10 May 2018 on the protection of personal data (Journal of Laws of 2018, item 1000) and in accordance with Regulation (EU) 2016/679 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 27 April 2016 on the protection of natural persons with regard to the processing of personal data and on the free movement of such data, and repealing Directive 95/46/EC (GDPR).”

Exercise - List of experiences

On a piece of paper:

  • List your most recent places of employment. Start with the one where you worked most recently
  • Add the dates and main responsibilities
  • Describe what skills you acquired or improved in this position

Good advice

Use ready-made free CV generators available in programmes (e.g. Canva, Google Docs) or on job portals (e.g. pracuj.pl). This will help you avoid missing important sections and find additional inspiration for visualising your strengths.

It is worth preparing an English version of your CV. If you use an online translator, choose one that is considered to be the most reliable. Remember to check the translation and the layout and aesthetics of the document, which may be distorted as a result of automatic translation.

Summary

Present yourself in a positive light.
Be honest and sincere, lies can be quickly exposed during an interview.
Do not hide gaps in your employment history, describe how you used this time for your development.
Failure is nothing to be ashamed of, especially if you can show how bad experiences have positively influenced your attitude and skills.
Your CV should be one or two pages long, legible and visually appealing, with a clear layout and sections.
Always tailor your CV to the job offer and the profile of the company you are sending it to. Try to ensure that the recipient of your CV finds keywords from their advertisement or promotional materials (job titles, responsibilities, references to declared values).
Send your CV to your e-mail address or save it in the cloud so that you can access it from anywhere.

What are social media and networking?
Social media are places on the Internet where people talk and share information.
Social media connects people with common interests via the Internet.
Social media is a broader term that includes tools (blogs, forums), while social networks are a specific type of platform that enables people to establish contacts, e.g. professional contacts. Currently, many of them combine both functions, supporting both relationships and mass content creation, hence the terms are often used interchangeably.

What are social media and networking?
Social media focuses on creating and sharing content (e.g. YouTube, Instagram), while social networks focus on building and maintaining interpersonal relationships (e.g. Facebook). The boundary is fluid, and modern platforms combine both functions, enabling two-way communication and interaction, unlike traditional one-way media.
Thanks to social media, users have the opportunity to build networks of contacts between friends, relatives, industry acquaintances or colleagues.
Networking is a process that promotes the exchange of information and ideas between individuals or groups with common interests and can serve social or business purposes.
Networking is a very effective method of finding a job.
LinkedIn

  • It provides an excellent opportunity for job seekers to connect with employers

  • In addition, the platform facilitates networking by allowing direct interaction with experts, employers and professional communities.

  • Facebook is a social networking platform that allows users to maintain contacts, exchange information and join various communities.
  • In the context of job hunting, it serves as a place to publish job offers, especially in thematic and local groups

How do employers search for employees online?

Social media is useful for building reputation, creating a professional online presence, expanding conversations, developing and managing networking contacts, and attracting new career opportunities. More and more employers and job seekers are using social media to match job offers to job seekers.

USE SOCIAL MEDIA TO LET YOUR NETWORK AND POTENTIAL EMPLOYERS KNOW THAT YOU ARE AVAILABLE AND LOOKING FOR WORK. TALK ABOUT WHAT KIND OF JOB YOU ARE LOOKING FOR.

Employers want to learn more about candidates, so they are increasingly using social networks to connect with potential employees.

Before you start using LinkedIn, you can add your photo and select the channels you want to follow, which will determine the type of information displayed on your LinkedIn home page. The most important thing is to edit your qualifications. You need to add your current and previous places of employment, as well as your education. You can also include a brief description of your previous positions and qualifications. In addition, you can add a summary to give others more information about yourself, as well as your specific skills.

Many viewers only read summaries, so it is worth taking care to include the most important information, including information about your job search and the industry in which you are looking for work.

LinkedIn is the largest and most useful social network for professionals running businesses and establishing business contacts, with over 380 million members. Basic membership on LinkedIn is free, and for most job seekers the free option is sufficient, but if you need paid features, you can always upgrade your account later.

TO OPTIMISE YOUR PRESENCE ON LINKEDIN, YOU NEED TO COMPLETE YOUR PROFILE, HIGHLIGHTING ALL YOUR TALENTS, EXPERIENCE, PASSIONS, INTERESTS AND AREAS OF EXPERTISE.

When you complete your profile, you will be perceived as a more competent person within your network. To appear more competent and optimise your profile, you need to take a few basic steps:

UPLOAD A PROFESSIONAL PHOTO.
Carefully select the photos you want to use, choosing those that are more professional.

CREATE AN ATTRACTIVE HEADLINE.
Headlines are crucial for networking and taking advantage of opportunities offered by recruiters. You need to describe yourself briefly, trying to be interesting to your network.

FILL IN THE "SUMMARY" SECTION.
You have 2,000 characters at your disposal and the opportunity to show who you are as a professional and what makes you interesting. The "Who/What/Goals" structure is one of the most effective ways to tell your story. Start with who you are, what you have to offer, and what goals you have set for your career.

FILL IN THE "SKILLS" SECTION OF YOUR PROFILE.
If you have completed your profile in full, you will have the chance to achieve "All-stars" status and, according to LinkedIn, you will be 40 times more likely to receive new opportunities.

The "All Stars" profile

You are an "All-star" if...

You have added your current position and two previous positions.
You have described your various positions.
You have added your skills and experience.

HAVING AN ALL-STAR PROFILE CAN SIGNIFICANTLY BOOST YOUR VISIBILITY AND OPEN UP PROFESSIONAL OPPORTUNITIES ON LINKEDIN.

Case study

The story of Andriy from Pszczyna (Poland, Silesian Province)
How a well-written CV and an "All Stars" profile helped me find a job

Andriy (in Poland for 2 years) had not worked for 4 months. He did not register as unemployed because he was convinced that with his skills and active job search, finding a new job would be a matter of days or weeks. This way of thinking was also encouraged by his place of residence, located between two large urban centres with a large number of businesses. However, Andriy sent his applications to companies without success. His CV was chaotic, and he did not have an account on any professional portal. He used a private email address called "andriy.parties123@...".

A friend sent him a link to a free training course entitled "Job offers on social media". Participating in the training course was a turning point in Andriy's professional life.

SOLUTIONS APPLIED (BASED ON THE TRAINING)

Improving his CV:
Andriy treated his CV as a personal advertising "brochure". He changed his email address to a professional one containing his first and last name. He divided the document into clear sections: personal details, education, experience and skills. In the section on gaps in employment (more than 3 months), he described the courses and studies he had completed during that time, showing that he had used the time productively.

Social media activity:
He created an account on LinkedIn. He uploaded a professional profile photo. He completed his profile by adding his current position, two previous jobs, education and skills. By completing his profile, he achieved "All Stars" status, which, according to statistics, gave him 40 times more chances of being noticed by recruiters. On Facebook, he joined groups related to his industry to follow job postings.

Summary

Key takeaways:

  • your CV is your advertisement, it must be concise, honest and tailored to each specific job offer
  • online image – employers check candidates online; avoid content that could harm you and maintain a professional image
  • the role of social media: LinkedIn is for building a professional network, while Facebook is a good place to look for local job offers in groups
  • All Stars profile – treat LinkedIn as your online CV, complete all sections (photo, experience, skills) to significantly increase your chances of getting an offer
